I thought you might like it!

I'm looking forward to Camp Bestival this year. I'll definitely be investigating this chap (I missed him last year). You can't go wrong with a Festival which is prepared to host a DJ playing 78s, The Fall AND The Wurzels. I'm still hoping for announcement that he's booked Girls Aloud but I suppose you can't have everything.

I'll check this out when I get the chance.

I had to laugh, it's got Growler singing "Old Lady You Mashin' Me Toe" which I've only just come across a few weeks ago - after years of listening to Calypso records - and there it is again today on this playlist.

And Alfredo Guttierez, vallenato maestro - what is the world comin too? Thanks raoh, a lovely eclectic mix!

This will be my 6th "Bestival/Camp Bestival" DJing with 78s as part of the "Shellac Collective".

www.myspace.com/theshellaccollective

I curate the "Black Dahlia" Tent and o-ordinate all the evenings musical entertainment there - live bands and 78s DJs

This Year Live Bands for Camp Bestival I have booked include:

"The Vagaband" - roots swing gypsy rock / "Big Black Cadillac" - rock-a-billy / "Whiskey River Boys" - Cajun Fiddle Harmonica etc

78s DJ's include Myself / DJ78 / The Shellac Sisters / Tip Top Tony Tunes / DJ Swing Maniac / DJ SisaMo / DJ Darren Harte / Tim's Hellzapoppin and last but not least MARK LAMARR who I have persuaded to dust off his best 78s for a rare airing in public

The Tent will be rocking and Swinging to a Retro Vibe every night 8.30 til the end !!

Very much hope to see you there!!

Greg

You're more than welcome to post on here Greg, it's really good to see you - and you don't have to live in France, though quite a few of us are cycling fans! We've had some excellent music threads - see Roah's "FF-ing Gorgeous".......

Hi Greg,

Welcome. "Great" to see you hear. Have a look round as we've been here quite a while and have amassed a load of stuff. It's good fun.

Cheers,

starless

I wonder if Greg might be interested in what I've been doing the last five years or so with shellac and early vinyl:

Nice Work Andrew - but classical is outside my remit... You will be very sad to hear that over the last 3 weeks I have taken 2500+ nearly mint Classical 78s and sets to the tip...

They came from the University of Cambridge Music Library (they could not play them anymore)

I had them for about 3 years and various people did take the odd thing but the market for them is so slow that I just could not afford to give them shelf space...

Shame I didn't know about you earlier...

From my perspective an absolute tragedy.

I had a van deliver ~3000 LPs from the UK a couple of weeks ago, with plenty of room to spare. If only you'd come here earlier I'd have given them all a loving home.

(This is, for me, like finding someone taking 2000 paintings to the tip, despite the strong possibility that there are a handful of original Monets, Van Goghs and da Vincis tucked in amongst the crap...)

I have to admit I find stories like that really quite depressing - and sadly far from unique or unusual. I can understand Greg's dilemma, when you find yourself in such a situation it can be virtually impossible to find an outlet for such apparently undesirable items - for any sum of money, or even as freebies. It's then sod's law that you hear of a good home as soon as they've been disposed of.

But it isn't just 78s, the situation also appears to be deterioating for Classical vinyl - have you an opinion on this Andrew? I've noticed in the last few years that Gramophone's small ads seem to feature far fewer dealers advertising for LPs - and my own experience seems to suggest that the number of genuinely sought after Classical LPs is diminishing at a rate.

Many UK charity shops now routinely throw out any LPs that are donated - their short-sighted logic being that because they've had a box of Val Doonican and Mrs Mill's records in the shop for 3 years, LPs therefore don't sell. To be frank, I've given up trying to deal with the typical charity shop manager - some are amenable to having somebody cast a knowing eye over donated books and records etc - but then you find yourself plagued by telephone calls to come and look at yet another set of plastic bound Dickens, or a hideous Reader's Digest LP boxset of Easy Listening Hits. And then somebody tells you about the Peter Hamilton 1st edition they bought in there the day before for £1.50. :(

And then you see a classical LP go on eBay for €300 or more just about every day...

Having just searched "completed listings" on Ebay, the situation is probably healthier than I thought - I ought to have another look at those classical LPs I have sitting here!

Sadly My friend John Peel is no longer with us and so the selection is all mine!!

I used to supply him with 78s for his show and he would play one every night on his Radio 1 show as "The Pigs Big 78" introduced by his wife Sheila.

His son Tom (Ravenscroft) is also a DJ and I will be teaming up with him at a gig in the Spiegel Tent as Part of The Norwich and Norfolk festival on May 22nd

Incidently for anyone interested. The Shellac Collective broadcast a live two hour show of 78s every month which you can listen on line to here

http://www.harboroughfm.co.uk/

It is always the 1st wednesday of the month 10 til midnight UK time so it's on TONIGHT!

It is simply themed by artists - Tonight we will be playing 78s by artists who start with the letter "L" (surnames or "act" names)

Although it is broadcast on Harborough fm we have more listeners around the worldthan we ever have in Market Harborough itself!

any requests?

Ah, I misunderstood the intro. I thought they were his 78s.
Sadly missed indeed. One of my favourite docus The Artist Formerly Known As Captain Beefheart was presented by John.
