Having sorted the rat(s) out, we have another problem : ants.

They were a nuisance last year - in the sitting room, a few going upstairs and some in the bathroom.
I used a fair amount of ant powder and stemmed the tide.

But they're here again, sending out scouts. I found a small hole near one of the French windows that we don't normally open, and put powder down and all around. It seems to have stopped the problem there for the moment. But they seem to have found a way into our bathroom (on the first floor) and I'm blowed if I can find where they're getting in.

The powder seems quite effective, but is there a magic way of finding their nests ? There are no signs of an army on the march, no columns going up the walls, nor any on the windowsills. Fortunately they don't come in the kitchen ...

We had an ant problem at our previous house. We used those little ant 'boxes' that you can get in the supermarkets to deal with them. Can't remember what they're called, but they're green plastic machins about 3 inches long.

Thanks, Mad. I'l have a look for them as the powder is messy !
I don't like using the powder outside as you never know who is going to step in it - dogs lick their feet, and birds might absorb it.
The problem needs to be solved now before the warm weather.

Isn't talcum powder effective with ants? makes the scouts smell strangely to the colony when they return, and they get attacked. Or am I thinking of nappy rash? Its one of those two, defo!! O:-)
We've found the little circular boxes effective too.

I imagine the boxes probably contain something that attracts the ants and gives them something nasty to take back to the colony.
On the list for the next supermarket run ....

I bought a couple of Mad's green boxes, put one down in the bathroom and several came scuttling out of a tiny hold in the grouting between the wall tiles and the floor tiles. Where the nest is, goodness only knows.
So I put a lump of powder on the 'ole and for the moment, all is quiet. If the bathroom problem is solved, I can use the brilliant box somewhere else - it's sure to be needed at some point !

I use variations of this stuff

https://www.amazon.fr/Bo%C3%AEte-anti-f ... ti+fourmis

They take it back to the nest and goodnight. I always place them around the house and terrace at this time of year and they seem quite effective

That's the sort of thing I have bought, Dave. No more ants in the bathroom and I shall put them outside by the doors - I might as well start on them now.
