How about we start a list of our favourite restaurants both for everyday grub and that special evening out.

I'll have a delve for some links to some of our goodies.

Where are yours?

Here are some of our favourites:

Auberge de la Mandrie. On the road betweeen Segur and Pompadour. Run by the Millott family. Friendly welcome and good food. It is a Logis hotel. http://www.la-mandrie.com

La Grange in St Sornin Lavolps just outside Pompadour. Found it the other day. Very nice lunchtime special and have heard it's good in the evening too. http://www.restaurantlagrange.fr

Near us but just over the border into Dordogne but worth the trip. Hotel/restaurant Franca. restaurant is a converted barn but has terrace for the summer. Terrific lunchtime special 5 courses for €12 (with choices) and a pichet of very pleasant red for €3. In the village of Cherveix Cubas near Hautefort.

If you're in Pompadour visiting the Haras national and want a picnic the charcuterie in the avenue du Midi (the High Street) has a superb choice and is a butcher too. Great for presents to take home as they can a lot of stuff themselves. http://www.le-hech.com

Made me feel hungry now.

In the daytime Le Correze in the centre of Brive, very cheap and cheerful, 3 courses for 9 euros

In the evening Le Tilleul de Sully in Montgibaud, fantastic food, not cheap but very popular, I would recommend that you book in advance (well in advance usually in the summer)

Forgot to mention that the Franca is very very popular at lunchtimes. Opens at 12 and if you are not there by 12.15, the few spare tables will have gone. Locals get preference as they're in every day. Not so bad in the summer because of the extra space outside.

Took friends to 'La Tete de L'Art' in Objat last week; wonderful food and it also doubles up as a art exhibition for local artists, there were some lovely photographs being exhibited when we were there. Highly recommended.

L'Auberge de l'Etang in Magnac-Bourg.

Le Birtrot Gourmand in Limoges (Place Winston Churchill)

Restaurant Plan d'Eau d Arfeuille, St Yrieix La Perche - haven't been there for a while, but it used to be excellent. Looks grims from the outside.

Just found another little gem for a good cheap lunch.

We noticed that this bar/cafe had been done up a while ago and popped in last week to try it.

Le Grillon is in the village of Chabrignac on the main road which goes from Pompadour to Objat. It's a few miles before you reach Objat.

Menu du Jour was Soup, (help yourself from a bowl brought to the table), mixed Charcuterie, Paella (full of mussels, prawns and pork, Cheese board (again help yourself), sort of chocolate blancmange, coffee and carafe of red wine all in the price of €12.

We got there at 12.00 and were first into the restaurant part (there's a small terrace for the summer) and there's seating for over 50 people. By 12.30 it was over half full and as we left at 1.15 a party of about 20 arrived.

Very popular obviously with local workers.

Great value.

I know I've moaned elsewhere here about the quality of french bistros and restaurants, well hush my mouth because here's one we went to a month ago and it's really good.
Hostellerie Charlemagne in Charroux, Vienne. It looks quite dusty and drab from the outside, but inside it's fine. Lovely owner, really good fresh food. There are menus of different prices. Big blazing log fire. I think, with wine, aperos, coffee etc, it came to 25 euros each. For the quality of the cooking, I don't think that's at all bad.

Sorry, didn't see that this was in Limousin. Mods could you transfer this to Poitou-Charente, please?

Just round the corner from us, in Correze terms, and is excellent. Good food at a good price, no big white plates with a smudge in the middle. Also good lunchtime for the menu de jour. The owner also has a little party piece when serving. I will let you find out that for yourselves. :-bd

Thanks for the tip - I noticed that the bar had been done up last time I went that way.

La Tribu in Brive is one of our favourites. It's on the corner by Briconautes. Having had 2 disastrous experiences of frogs' legs I tried them here and I'm now a fan. His brochettes in summer are really good, expecially the Txistora (basque sausage) and the chicken liver one. Dh reckons that his Tiamisu is one of the best he's tasted. There's a menu mon-fri lunchtime - bit dearer than the 12€ 5-course ones, but good. He quite often has wines from the far sw such as Baixas as he's from that area.

We went to La Tete d'Art for our 30th anniversary, and were a bit disappointed. The tuile served with my dessert was softish and stale - something we felt shouldn't have happened given their prices.

We like the Hotel de France in Objat - it's been consistent over the last 5 years. 12€ weekday menu very good value - often nicer choices than the more expensive ones. Staff very friendly. Last time we had a warm seafood salad as starter that was good enough to lick the plate.

Also, a couple of weeks ago, we went to 7 in Pompadour. We'd been looking for somewhere to take an elderly (French) uncle, and had a very nice meal there. Will definitely go again. Also a cheaper menu weekday lunchtimes - think it's 12€, and they also do accommodation.

I'm glad you mentioned another spot as it has reminded me to update my original posting.

La Grange in St Sornin changed hands a few months ago but I understand is still good.

I think the web address has changed to: http://www.restaurantlagrange.fr/

Le Charmant in Uzerche is good, the owner Richard is married to an English lady, Kate, so no language problems: http://www.lecharmant-uzerche.com/

As mentioned 7 in Pompadour, English owned: http://www.7bedandbreakfast.com/

And in our own village but only open July and August, 7 days a week, we have La Part des Anges. Manu is very particular where his meat etc., comes from, local and good only. The setting is superb with a terrace overlooking the river if weather is good.

Website for info: http://www.restaurant-correze.com/?p=84

The Auberge Henri IV in Segur is in the process of changing hands but have no idea what experience they have or what part of the market they will be catering to. Time will tell. Currently the close on Tuesdays.

And if you want a simple snack or Trout and chips on a Monday night then Michel and Anderson in the cafe, Vert Gallant, will be pleased to see you. They are sometimes a little late opening for lunch but are closed all day on Wednesdays.

For good low priced eating Le Dream's in the Casino Geant complex in Brive and the Black Lion in Argentat. The latter does excellent French cuisine and very good Fish & Chips for 10 euros (With the inevitable lettuce!)

I know no-one lives our way, but there is an excellent resto in Saumur : "Le 7", right in the centre of town. A very friendly welcome, light and bright but not gaudy, modern decor, old wooden floorboards, and, most importantly delicious food.
