Glyphosate, that is, seeing that it is just about every where now

Apparently the LD50 of glyphosate is 4,320 mg per kg of rat. Thus 432 grams of glyphosate are needed to kill a 100 kg man, 50 percent of the time (not sure Roundup tolerance will go down well as a reason not to diet!).

For comparison, the LD50 of salt is about 3,000 and I still sprinkle it on my chips!

There is a difference between LD50 - lethal dose for 50% of population - and safe contact level for a known or suspected carcinogen.

As an example LD50 for Benzene in rats is 930mg/kg (930ppm). Safe contact level has been quoted as zero but legal "safe" working levels range from 2.5ppm down to 1ppm depending on which country you are in.

Whilst normally I would not trust Monsanto as far as I can throw them, I think they do (as a result of their corporate behaviour) elicit a fairly strong "anti" feeling which is behind some of the Cancer scares.

As I understand, of four major independent studies, only one has suggested a possible link - and Monsanto claim it is flawed. More from horse's mouth:

I would have no concerns spraying roundup (but not at same time as eating my salted chips). I am much more wary of paraquat.

Monsanto is the pits, the people they have killed with their genetic cotton/corn/soya.
Why do they get away with it ? well because of their strong lobbying in the good old USA.

Absolutely - and as I say normally I do not like them. To your list I would add the nonsense of seeking patent payments from people who save their own seeds, not to mention the negative impact on organic growers nearby. And of course, if the TTIP is signed then it will all be coming to a field near you.

BUT, Glyphosate does appear to have been widely examined, is out of patent and produced by many other companies - so on this I am inclined to believe the independent (as opposed to sponsored) research.

Even here in France where they only have trials :)) our local miller where we buy stone ground flour, when asked, said that he could no longer guarantee that his flour didn't contain traces of gm products. :-s
