Spmeone at photobucket has gone and done the dirty BIG TIME and realised that they can hold their user up to what may be classed as ransom! The cowsons have deleted all of the photos that anyone using their previously free service without any prior warning. That means that if you have been using them and posted photos all you will get is

Mind you, their P500 is a good price at $400, well good for them anyway! So sorry folks, but all yer photobucket photos have gone!

I am seriously looking at flickr at the moment, but there's no way I could even try to replace photos I've posted!

Not quite - according to their website the photos are still there - its just that they cannot be linked to from other sites.

As you say, there are alternatives out there.

well, I have just tried to email a photo to myself and when I clicked on the link in the email it came up as

"Sorry, the requested page does not exist.

Please check the URL for correct spelling and capitalization."

As it was a copy of the url from my p/bucket page the spelling is correct. I also tried clicking on a photo in 'my bucket' it came up with the dial and the demand to pay up. So as far as I can see it's just another form of ransom ware! The hpotos may well be there BUT you are going to have to pay to get to them!

Edit : - Just tried clicking on another album and this is the result

Image

The link indicated all of the correct thing, but?? So in my book that's a pay up or loose out!

I'll go and have a look shortly, does this mean that photos posted on websites have now disappeared from those sites?

I was already looking at alternatives the other day as Photobucket was getting more complicated and slow.

What is the resaon why we can't post images directly to sites such as this?

I have look at a couple of the sites I'm on and they all show that logo I'm afraid to say.
That is such a stupid and underhand trick and I hope that they suffer for it! Just recently they have been chucking an ad up when you open the page asking if you are going to upgrade for just $3.99/month, if I remember correctly, but no indication that they werre going to bring the hammer down big time!

Well I've just checked the most recent photos that I have posted on the Dobermann site, and they are still there, so I am waiting to see if they disappear.

Still working for me, so far, this is the last photo I put on Photobucket, it, and all my others still appear to be there. :-\

Reports elsewhere suggest that if you pay any subscription at all to PB, your pictures are still available and posted elsewhere - this can be as little as the "nominal" monthly fee to avoid getting all of the adverts.

Regarding other free photo hosting sites like Flickr; just how long will they remain free? They have to be financed somehow and this is achieved by advertising (mainly). By posting on forums the people looking at the pictures avoid the adverts.

This does not excuse PB who seem to be guilty of (super)highway robbery.

I used to use Image Shack until a few years ago when it gradually became more difficult to use, perhaps they demanded money with menaces too.

In my latest quest I looked again at them and they appeared to be asking a fee.

A way around the problem (for the moment anyway):
"You can add "~original" to the end of the Photo-F-ing-Bucket image link and it'll show again, e.g.:

My post here:

I clicked on Edit, then on the (broken) picture and see the image link is :

http://i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o62 ... hgrssm.jpg

So, I just added "~original" to the end (without the quotes):

http://i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o62 ... g~original

Then I clicked on Insert, then Save Changes"
From another forum.
ps looks like they've stopped this as well now.

I gave up on Photobucket years ago and have used http://www.imgur.com ever since.

Not defending PB but frankly anybody who entrusts their only copy of a photo or image to the cloud or an online service, as many complainers seem to have, is barking mad and gets no sympathy from me.

There must be once in my life that I agree with you Ernie. :o

And here it is, who knows what happens to the smart arses who run these clouds at some point in the future. All my stuff on PB can disappear overnight (and maybe has done, I haven't checked since Sunday) and it won't bother me one jot apart from some old, blank posts on a forum, as they are all on my 2 separate backup disks. :)

Well they took their time, but the axe has finally fallen on my account. I uploaded half a dozen photos ok this afternoon and could see my whole library there, but when I uploaded them to a forum I use, nobody but me could see them.

Time to find something else.

Meanwhile, videos to You Tube just get better and better. maybe it's just me getting the hang of it.

Not all bad news then, the site that I almost exclusively post photos on, the French Dobermann Association site, has a way of posting photos directly, completely avoiding blackmailers like Photobucket.

I have only just realised this, and it works. It involves clicking a button in the reply panel marked 'hebergement' (hosting), never noticed it before, and the photos can be posted directly from that.

I did pose the question earlier in this thread as to why we can't post directly to the forum. Now I have my answer, we can, but not, apparently to this one. :-(

My problem with direct posting is that I quite often post the same on several different forums such as woodwork, Anglo/French and Mac forums and the that gets tedious. But if I can get my brain cell around using flickr and/or Postimage.org it should be OK. As I said, I have several copies of all of the photos on photobucket so they can go to hell as far as I am concerned.

Being a ludite I never use any of them, I have a stand alone hard drive which everything important including family photos is backed up on, this is stored away from PC in an under floor safe with docs, when away.
I built the safe when laying a new concrete floor and I defy anyone to find it.

On our MacBppk I have 2 system backups, Time Machine and Carbon copy cloner and 3 hdds 2 1/2" backing up photos. I have a similar setup on our iMac. I also have a Synology NAS box pluged by ethernet into the router. That has 2 X 2 Tb hdds and they are mirrored. I had one fail within the warranty period. It was replaced and the new one was rebuilt to mirror the other. Raid at it best for me..

So it will be an ill wind that lets me loose them.

I have the same, in principle, 2 external hard drives and a third which was filled up a couple of years ago.

Photobucket, or anything like them, were never a means for storage for me. They were only ever a way of posting photos on forums and, since I only effectively do that on one, and they have this hosting facility, I won't bother with PB anymore.
