It's not causing any problems, just that I wonder if anybody can satisfy my curiosity about this situation. Because of draining problems on one side of our house, as a temporary measure we have diverted the dishwasher discharge pipe into a 20 litre plastic water container, and every time the appliance is used we empty the container into another drain. No problems at all, just a bit inconvenient. Now to the question, most times the amount of water discharged is about 8 or 9 litres. Then every now and again for no reason we can make out, as we always run the machine at full capacity, it discharges about 15 litres. I just wonder why? and would welcome any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I think it's detecting the levels of particulates in the water as it cycles through the system, and drains when it exceeds a certain level, replacing the dirty water with clean. Thus the dirtier the load, the more water it uses and the more you collect.

I suppose it depends on make and model of dishwasher. Mine has a cycle that detects the amount of 'dirt' in the water and alters the wash according to some in-built magic. As Andrew said, that could be the reason.

Cheers, That sounds credible, by the way its a Bosch. As I said it's not a problem, and normally you wouldn't know how much water is used, but because of the container having to be manually emptied we noticed the discrepancy and just wondered why. :-bd

The aforementioned explanation is the most likely but ...

... any chance you might be forgetting to empty the bucket from time to time? ;))
