It's only recently I fully researched my Fathers involvement. He started out with the Somerset light infantry with his elder brother. They were assigned to different battalions so seen very little of each other. The Somerset light infantry was absorbed into the 43 Wessex division (the Wyverns) for the invasion. They landed on June 6th and ended up fighting the SS for hill 112 Caen with terrible losses all round. Since then the Wyverns were christened the 'Yellow Devils' by the SS.

He was a sniper and had some interesting tales to tell including capturing some senior German officers in a meeting, for which 'gongs' were awarded. We visited some of his memories in Holland before he died - Nijmegen being one. After the turmoil of Market Garden they helped sort out the mess. They were also involved in 'saving the Yank's arses' in the battle of the Bulge.

They were first across the Seine and part of the push into Germany.

He hated every minute of the war and was called up for Korea, never went because we, I was less than one year old, went to Australia on the £10 ticket to get away from the madness.

Ah, the PS

Big brother ended up in Burma with the Chindits and never made it - I was named after him.
