I've just read & enjoyed this thread, weird though that may sound. It shows how helpful everybody is, and that I'm not the only person who needs help :)
I don't have a Kindle, but I run my mother's v basic model so that she can have books in BIG print to read. I have set it up very simply, and when she has read the current selection of books I archive them next time I buy her some more (she can't handle things like Amazon). That way she doesn't get too confused as there will only be 4-5 titles to choose from.
If Mum has been button pressing by mistake it does sometimes take me a while to work out what she's done, & to get it back.
I leave the wifi off (i.e. in airplane mode) except when downloading to prolong the time between charging, and I shop for the Kindle books on my desktop.

yes Liz as I have said here before its sooooo good for our ageing parents, my pa in law, 92, gets on well with our old original Kindle, with a friend in the UK sorting out any wrong button pushes, set up with a large font it means that he can enjoy books again and its easier to hold with his palsy.

I couldn't buy a Dan Simmons book on the UK Kindle store for some unknown reason so I bought a second hand paperback copy. I have to say it's weird reading a real book again after 7 years e-book only. The weight of a book, particularly as I am a bedtime reader, is a shock and I keep fumbling for the book mark before I drift off.

Also a lot easier to travel with.

Hi liz,
Aside from Dave's fumbling in bed, I have also been very grateful for all the help I've received. No one has called me thick, stupid etc. It's really lovely, as a totally non technical person, to be given help and advice in a non threatening, non condescending way. Thanks to all the advice and help I can now use my kindle reasonably confidently. This is a great forum.
Sue.

I read a "real" book a few weeks ago (unavailable on Kindle) for the first time in years too. Delighted to be able to return to electronically rendered books once I'd finished it for much the same reasons. How ever did we manage?...

I must say that both Mami and I prefer real books and use the kindle only when travelling or as yesterday when I spent two and a half hours at the local VW garage whilst the car had its biannual service.

Just an update to thank everyone for all the help, advice, encouragement and support I received when setting up my kindle. I couldn't have done it without you all.
This morning I finished a book and immediately bought and downloaded the next in the series so I can get on with my reading this evening. No more waiting for ages to make the next order from Amazon! How did I ever manage in the past without this wonderful little machine.
Thanks again to you all!
Regards,
Sue.

I bought OH a Kindle for his birthday a while back and have to admit that I must get myself one. Having been a fan of real books, it took a long time to get around to using a Kindle. But what a discovery !
You do have to choose carefully as some books are more expensive. Whilst I would still stick to hard copies of reference books, the choice of other reading matter is endless !

Plus, for some people whose eyes are starting to age a little, you can turn the size up a little.
Or a lot

If you're prepared to wait. Use this website: http://uk.ereaderiq.com/ It will email you when the title you want has dropped in price. :D
