by the French Sénat. It now has to go back to the lower house where the final provisions will be settled.
Both houses have agreed that a discount on books + free p&p is unfair competition vis-à-vis bookshops.

Booksellers have lobbied long and hard for a change in the law, but it probably won’t have the desired effect of saving physical bookstores. I suppose cart makers lobbied against the motor car too…

There are ways round everything and I am sure the wiley ones at Amazon will find it. France does behave like a very dim dinosaur sometimes. 8-}

With France's obsession with protectionism, anything that smacks of competition must be stamped on :(

Surely you can just go to another Amazon site. Belgium, Spain, Germany etc. Does this contradict EU law?

I think everything contradicts French Law. :- My account is in the Uk. I have never been interested in changing it.

That's it, unfortunately. The same applied to shops selling e-fags, who've had to give way to the super-protected tobacconists. I have both FR and UK accounts but I'll continue to download e-books from my French Amazon account. Amazon employ thousands in France, but that counts for nothing apparently.
As sure as eggs is eggs, there'll be another lobby group along soon getting e-commerce banned from selling cheaper wares than your local widget shop.
