Each year 18.000 tonnes of railway sleepers are converted into charcoal for barbecues, a quarter of the charcoal produced comes from the sleepers which have been treated with creosote

To be honest, I find this difficult to believe. :-?

I wouldn't even use them to contain raised beds.
